What File Types Can You Share Online? Complete Guide

July 5, 2026

Most file sharing services block certain file types — usually executables that could contain malware. Here’s exactly what you can and can’t upload, and why those restrictions exist.

Video

MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, WEBM, WMV, FLV, 3GP — any video up to 250MB.

Code & Text

HTML, CSS, JS, JSON, XML, YAML, PY, RB, GO, RS, JAVA, C, CPP, H — code files are just text files.

Other

Fonts (TTF, OTF, WOFF2), ebooks (EPUB, MOBI), design files (PSD, AI, SKETCH, FIG), 3D models (OBJ, STL, GLB), databases (SQLITE, DB).

Blocked File Types

For security, fff files blocks executable formats that could contain malware:

Why Executables Are Blocked

Executable files can run code on someone’s computer. Even a seemingly harmless EXE ("invoice.pdf.exe") can install malware. Blocking them protects recipients from accidentally running dangerous files.

If you need to share an executable: zip it first. The ZIP format preserves the file while preventing accidental execution. Most services — including fff files — allow executables inside password-protected archives.
